Ethiopia: famine worsens in Tigray and access to humanitarian aid in question

According to the UN and the World Food Program (WFP), 5.2 million Ethiopians, or 91% of the population of Tigray, are in need of emergency food assistance.

Five days after the capture of the regional capital Mekele by the Tigray Defense Forces, the international community is concerned about the dire humanitarian situation there. More than 400,000 people are facing famine, and an additional 1.8 million people are on the brink of famine, according to the UN.

Some suggest the numbers are even higher, 33,000 children are severely malnourished, « UN Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Ramesh Rajasingham has warned.

The UN urges the rebels to implement Ethiopia’s ceasefire. Despite the announcement of a « unilateral ceasefire » by the Ethiopian government, the rebels continued to advance.
