On World Day this year, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) launched a campaign titled “Victims’ Voices Leads the Way” to highlight untold stories of victims and their role in the fight against trafficking.
The UN has urged states to take action against human trafficking, one-third of the victims of which are children.
For the UN, the Covid-19 pandemic has pushed up to 124 million more people into extreme poverty, and « several million » have remained vulnerable to the scourge.
According to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, half of the victims in low-income countries are children, adding that most are trafficked for the purpose of forced labor.
