Women continue to die from unsafe abortion; Countries must act quickly to ensure that health providers and systems can deliver quality care to girls and women.

According to a study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners in 17 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, a considerable number of girls and women continue to die and facing the negative consequences of an unsafe abortion.

Data collected on more than 23,000 women attending health facilities with abortion-related complications shows that most of these women had mild or moderate abortion-related complications, but there were still many who had serious or life-threatening complications, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Better understanding what works in the clinical management and care of girls and women facing abortion-related complications is critical to ensuring their health and well-being, according to the WHO. As such, countries must act quickly to ensure that health providers and systems can deliver quality care to girls and women.
