The Amhara region saw the largest increase, with 3.7 million people. More than 7.8 million people need help in northern Ethiopia where the nutritional situation is deteriorating every day. Screening data from the three regions Afar, Amhara and Tigray show malnutrition rates between 16% and 28% among children. Even more alarming, up to 50% of pregnant and breastfeeding women screened in Amhara and Tigray regions are also malnourished.

WFP has warned that to continue operations, it urgently needs $ 316 million to deliver aid over the next six months. Lack of funds has already forced WFP to cut rations for some 710,000 refugees and 2.4 million food insecure people in the Somali region.
