Human Rights Agency, deeply concerned about the crisis in Sudan, supports the Sudanese people’s aspiration for democracy, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Since the military coup of October 25, 2021, at least 13 people have been killed and several hundred have been injured. Many people – including government ministers, human rights activists, members of political parties, civil society activists, lawyers, journalists, and protest leaders – have been arrested and placed in custody.

At the start of a special session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the head of human rights of the United Nations, Michelle Bachelet, strongly calls on the Sudanese military leaders and those who support them to step down in order to allow the country to resume the path of institutional and legal reforms. The High Commissioner for Human Rights described the October 25 military takeover as « deeply disturbing. » The United Nations believes that the military is now responsible for several violations of international law.
