Migrant death toll in Mediterranean over past week ‘rises to 880
At least 880 migrants and refugees have died in shipwrecks and capsized vessels in the Mediterranean Sea over the past week, the UNHCR said on Tuesday after interviewing survivors in Italy.
The United Nations Refugee Agency says that 2016 is ‘proving to be particularly deadly’ in the Mediterranean, with some 2,510 lives lost so far compared to 1,855 in the same period last year.
